Homelessness has increased 30% over the last two years, with shelter waitlists over 1,100 people long. Meanwhile, the city repeatedly fails to provide basic services and supplies to the unhoused, opening only 25 mats for 4,200 people during rainstorms, and handing out an insignificant number of supplies.
To add insult to injury, the city regularly confiscates tarps, tents, medicine, family heirlooms, and survival supplies during “sweeps” conducted by SFPD and the Department of Public Works by order of Mayor London Breed. All of this has led the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to housing to condemn the sweeps in San Francisco as “cruel and inhumane”.
Only safe and democratically controlled housing for all will end the homelessness crisis. Until then, we will step in to provide mutual aid where the city will not.
Summer Survival Kits for Unhoused Neighbors
Our neighbors often go without access to basic hygiene necessities including menstruation supplies. This fundraiser will go towards putting together survival kits that will include these as well as other basic supplies (socks, wipes, ponchos, food, water, etc.).
Any excess funds will go to the next survival gear drive. Donations are not tax-deductible.
